90 年代中期，一個被視為對 Windows 最有威脅的操作系統正式面世，名為 Linux。由於它是基於 Unix 發展出來，因此幾乎擁有
Unix 所擁有的功能。加上 Linux 是一個公開內碼 (Open Source) 及免費的系統，因此吸引了不少企業公司選用。
Linux 的受歡迎程度不斷增加，很多軟件開發公司已都不想放過這個 OS 的大好市場， 而且 Linux
所能夠支援的硬件愈來愈多，其系統的可靠性亦不斷提升。加上學習 Linux 的人亦越來越多，因此市場上每間生產商都爭相推出不同類型的 Linux
系統認證。
LPI Certification 在市場上較為人熟悉的 Linux 專業證書，LPI 全名是 Linux Professional
Institute，是一個來自加拿大的非牟利 Linux 專業團體所頒發之證書。原來 LPI 的後台亦不弱，有 IBM，Novell 和 SGI
等 I.T 龍頭企業在幕後支持，而支援的 Linux 平台有 SuSE、Caldera 和 TurboLinux 等，範圍之廣泛，實在不可輕視。
